Customer reviews from AmazonFour Stars from this reader: 4.0 out of 5 stars A good, but lopsided, view of Portland's maritime industry Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2022 Verified Purchase After reading this book you might come away with the impression that Shaver is the only tug company on the river. Apparently Shaver opened it's archive up to the author and it shows. Shaver's big competitor, Knappton, is almost completely missing from the book. In fact, the word Knappton appears exactly once and there are zero pictures of the tugs with the big "K" on the stack that were so prevalent on the Columbia and Willamette rivers for much of the 20th century. On the other hand, the topics the author chose to cover, primarily Shaver, Kaiser shipyards, and Fred Devine salvage, she covers very well. The book is a worthwhile addition to any maritime library, just realize you aren't getting a complete history. My reply- I appreciate all of the wonderful reviews of my book, Portland's Maritime History. I did see one critique that I felt I should explain as to why Knappton was not included in my research. My book only focused on maritime companies owned and operated within Portland's city limits. Knappton Towboat Company does not meet this guideline. "Founded in 1910, the Knappton Towboat Company began with the acquisition a series of steamers purchased for log towing by the Brix family of Knappton, Washington. In 1920, the company's operations were incorporated as the Knappton Towboat Company of Astoria, Oregon. In the following decades, the Knappton Towboat would acquire the majority of competitors in the log transportation industry in the area. And, the company became the primary towing vessel operator on the lower Columbia River. In 1988, the Knappton Towboat Company was rebranded. And, became the Brix Maritime Company of Seattle, Washington." https://www.tugboatinformation.com/company.cfm?id=610 |
4.0 out of 5 stars This Book Tells About The History Of Portland Oregon's Maritime. Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2018 This book tells about the history of Portland's Maritime, Here is some of the interesting information that this book mentions: The powerful Columbia River is 2,000 miles long, making it the second-longest river in the United States. The Portland Harbor has the biggest wheat export in the U.S. and is the third largest auto import gateway in the United States. The Willamette River is a major tributary of the Columbia River, accounting for 12% to 15% of the Columbia River's flows. The Willamette Valley is a basin that holds two-thirds of Oregon's population. Portland maintains the largest population of sailboats in Oregon. Even today, the Willamette River has some of the greatest sturgeon and spring chinook salmon fishing anywhere. Served with several divers from PNW but never understood their history. Fun find in an Oregon coast antique store. Glad Rebecca documented this unknown history. 5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2014 Verified Purchase I love this book.
